Intellectual Property Strategy
We build an intellectual property strategy that protects our research properly and carries new drug candidates through to research, co-development, licensing and clinical development.
Our intellectual property is not confined to one therapeutic area or one technology. What has been published includes granted patents and patent applications, in Japan and elsewhere, across several fields of research and development, oncology among them.

Our Stance
Inventions, technologies, data and know-how arising from our research and development are protected and managed through a combination of patents, trade marks, know-how and trade secrets, chosen according to the nature of the technology, the stage of development and our business strategy.
In joint research and co-development we distinguish background IP, held by each party before the work begins, from foreground IP, the results that arise from it, and we set out ownership, filing, rights to work the invention, licensing to third parties and publication of results in the agreement.
IP Portfolio
PATENTS
We file and prosecute patents in Japan and abroad on new drug candidates, uses, compositions, manufacturing methods and other research results, according to the nature of the technology and the stage of development. What has been published includes granted patents, PCT international publications and national application publications across several fields of research and development, oncology among them.
TRADE MARKS
Product and service names are registered and managed as brand protection and business need require. For registered marks we publish the country or region of registration and the registration number, so far as these can be disclosed.
KNOW-HOW & TRADE SECRETS
Manufacturing conditions, evaluation methods, analytical techniques and other undisclosed technical information are managed as know-how or trade secrets where appropriate, weighed against the disclosure that a patent application entails.

We welcome discussions about joint research, co-development and licensing in relation to the development assets, technologies and intellectual property we hold and manage.
Indication, territory, field, exclusivity, the rights covered and the division of development, manufacturing and commercialisation are discussed case by case, according to the programme and the legal status of the intellectual property concerned. For details, see Licensing Opportunities.
Discussions begin with the sharing of non-confidential information. Where required, detailed information on intellectual property, non-clinical and clinical data, CMC and development plans is then disclosed in stages, following an NDA or CDA.
Which rights can be licensed, and on what scope, depends on ownership, co-ownership, third-party rights, existing agreements and the status of protection in each country or region. The rights and terms in any particular case are settled through due diligence and the resulting agreement.
