Message from the Representative Director
Life is not the sum of its parts.
Life is a complex system in which molecules, cells, tissues, immunity and metabolism interact to hold the body in balance. We value the science that analyses each of those elements precisely; at the same time, we believe that the possibility of new medicines lies in a complex-systems approach to drug discovery, one that takes those interactions as a system.
We turn the questions that arise from the phenomena of life into research hypotheses, and test them scientifically alongside researchers in Japan and abroad. We draw a clear line between what is known and what is not yet known, and we stay honest with every piece of data. That is where our research and our drug discovery begin.
Science born in Japan, carried into research worldwide. Knowledge born worldwide, carried into the medicines and the care of the future.
We look forward to exploring the next possibilities in life science and drug discovery together with colleagues around the world.

For thirty years he has worked in the clinical development of medicines, particularly in immunomodulators, antibody drugs and oncology. He has taken part in the clinical development and launch of a considerable number of medicines, among them medicines now used as first-line treatment in clinical practice.
Working closely with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, he also established the Biostatistics Center at Kurume University. It was the first university department in Japan for clinical statistics to be founded on a medical faculty, and its mission has been to train biostatisticians and so strengthen life science in Japan.
Continuing to take on challenges is what leads to growth and to progress — and to better options for the people we serve.
