BACKGROUND

Background: The Sustainability Crisis Facing Health Systems Worldwide

Public healthcare systems around the world are under growing strain and risk rapidly becoming unsustainable. Ageing populations, the rising prevalence of chronic disease, and the increasing cost of treatments are placing pressure on public finances. Shortages of healthcare workers, frequent outbreaks, climate related disasters and widening social inequalities are further stretching already fragile systems.

At the same time, many national health systems remain oriented around reactive, high-cost models of care. Over the long term, this approach may struggle to deliver care that is affordable, fair and resilient. Addressing these pressures will likely require fundamental changes in how systems are designed, financed and evaluated, alongside a stronger focus on prevention, primary care and innovative models of treatment.

Why Advalife Science Is Convening This Discussion with Nature

Advalife Science has worked to explore the potential of medicine, science and healthcare technology developed in Japan, and to deliver it to the people who need it. The challenges the world faces, however, cannot be solved by a single therapy or a single technology. Ageing populations, chronic disease, healthcare costs, workforce shortages and environmental pressures have to be understood together — which means connecting domains that are usually kept apart: medicine, science, society and economics.

For this symposium, Advalife Science is named as a principal of the event on the official Nature Partnerships event page, and the programme connects with The Mila at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. We see this as an opportunity to bring the work we have built in Japan into an international setting — Nature's science communication platform and Oxford's academic environment.

Advalife Science serves as a co-host and convener, planning and delivering this symposium together with Nature Partnerships. Our central contribution is to design a forum in which researchers, clinicians and policymakers come together, and in which the discussion of health system reform meets the discussion of innovative scientific approaches.

A vertically integrated model that carries academic findings rapidly into clinical practice through Sinclair Ginza Clinic and Sinclair Shinsaibashi Clinic.

We have worked to explore the potential of medicine, science and healthcare technology born in Japan, and to deliver it to those who need it. Yet when we consider the challenges the world now faces, the medicine of the years ahead will not rest on a single therapy or a single technology. It is profoundly meaningful to us that, together with Nature Partnerships and within one of the world's leading academic environments at the University of Oxford, we are able to discuss the future of healthcare with leading experts from many countries. From Japan to Oxford, and from Oxford to the world.

SIGNIFICANCE WORLDWIDE

What This Symposium Means for Healthcare and Patients Worldwide

Alongside the discovery and development of new drug candidate compounds at our own research facility, Advalife Science has built manufacturing capability in collaboration with our group pharmaceutical company NOVARK BIO Co., Ltd. and, through the operation of Sinclair Ginza Clinic and Sinclair Shinsaibashi Clinic, a structure that connects drug discovery research through manufacturing to clinical practice as a single whole.We believe the discussions at this symposium — on health system reform, preventive care, drug discovery and advanced medicine, with researchers and clinicians from around the world — will bring new perspectives to that work by our group here in Japan.

Engaging with international research networks gives us a foundation on which our medical database analysis and our clinical findings can, in time, be examined and developed within a wider context of medicine and drug discovery research. Advalife Science will carry the international insight and collaboration gained here into the research and development of new treatment options, and into long-term efforts to deliver better care to patients around the world.
